A Travel Blog Built for the World
VoyageFox is a multilingual travel blogging website run by Nathalie, a German travel blogger who documents destinations across Europe, Asia, the Americas and beyond. The site publishes content in both English and German, targeting a global audience of travel enthusiasts.
CraftedRank has been working with VoyageFox for over a year — handling on-page SEO for every new blog post, resolving critical technical issues as they arise, improving Core Web Vitals, and continuously enhancing the site's UI/UX and performance.
What We Were Up Against
When we first started working with VoyageFox, the website had several critical issues that were silently hurting traffic, user experience, and search rankings.
Slow PageSpeed Scores
Performance scores were stuck between 50–60. Unoptimized images, render-blocking resources and no caching were dragging down load times and Core Web Vitals.
High CLS Score
Cumulative Layout Shift was critically high — elements were jumping around on load, hurting both user experience and Google's Core Web Vitals assessment.
Traffic Blocked in India & Japan
Historical analytics data revealed a mysterious drop — entire countries had stopped sending traffic. The root cause was completely invisible to the client.
WPML Multilingual Misconfiguration
The English and German blog posts were not displaying correctly due to a misconfigured WPML plugin — breaking the multilingual experience for a global audience.
No Systematic On-Page SEO
New blog posts were being published without proper meta optimization, keyword targeting or internal linking — leaving rankings and organic traffic on the table.
Outdated UI Components
The footer, search page and content navigation were outdated and needed a modern redesign to improve usability and reduce bounce rates.
How We Solved It, Step by Step
The Firewall Discovery
One of the first things we noticed when reviewing VoyageFox's historical analytics was a sharp, unexplained drop in traffic from India and Japan. Other countries showed normal patterns — but these regions had essentially gone silent over recent months. After careful investigation across DNS, hosting, and server configurations, we identified the root cause: the hosting provider's firewall had silently blocked traffic from these regions entirely. We escalated the issue directly to the hosting provider, had the firewall rules corrected, and traffic from the affected countries was fully restored.
Speed Optimization — 50 → 80-90
We tackled the performance issues systematically. All images were converted to WebP format, dramatically reducing LCP (Largest Contentful Paint). We minimized render-blocking CSS and JavaScript via optimization plugins. A proper caching solution was implemented across the site. The result: PageSpeed scores jumped from the 50–60 range all the way to 80–90 — a transformation that directly improved both user experience and search rankings.
CLS Fix — Eliminating Layout Shift
The high Cumulative Layout Shift score was traced back to the top section of the homepage — elements were loading in an unstable way, causing visible jumps. We diagnosed the specific elements causing the shift, applied proper dimension attributes and loading strategies, and the CLS score improved dramatically — moving the site into Google's "Good" range for Core Web Vitals.
WPML Configuration Fix
VoyageFox publishes travel content in both English and German to reach a wider global audience. The WPML plugin was misconfigured, causing blog posts to not display correctly across languages — breaking the bilingual experience entirely. We diagnosed the configuration issues, restructured the language assignments, and restored full multilingual functionality across the site.
Footer, Search Page & Custom TOC
We redesigned and rebuilt the site's footer from scratch — improving layout, navigation links and overall visual quality. The search page was also redesigned for better usability. Additionally, we developed a custom Table of Contents plugin tailored specifically for VoyageFox's long-form travel guides — improving content navigation, time-on-page and on-page SEO signals.
On-Page SEO for Every Post
Every time Nathalie publishes a new blog post, we perform comprehensive on-page SEO — optimizing meta titles and descriptions, targeting the right keywords, building internal links, optimizing image alt text and ensuring the post is fully set up to rank. This systematic approach has compounded over time, contributing to consistent weekly traffic growth.
